ARE YOU LOOKING FOR TROUBLE,
FUNK?

Of course you are, you're on the site! Learn about legendary duo, Daft Punk, now!

Daft Punk were a revolutionary dance and electronic music duo comprised of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Cristo. They began their music journey with a rock band named "Darlin'", which was called "daft-punky thrash" by a critic. Determined to set themselves apart from other music acts of the time, they used the insult to launch their house music career. Their debut album, "Homework", was made at home, with very little equipment, to prove that anyone could make music if they wanted to. The duo would revolutionise dance music as a genre with their works, as they sampled disco, other DJ's, and paid homage to the music of their childhood.
The timeline of events for Daft Punk went a little like this: First, they began with "Homework", as previously mentioned. Then the duo quickly began work on their sophomore album, "Discovery", which took a left turn of sorts. Rather than honing in on the Chicago house sound they were experimenting with in their debut, the duo decided to focus on the music of their childhood, such as disco and ballads. This album would become one of Daft Punk's most famous, and greatly contributed to their fame. The samples used in this album are still being analysed for their greatness, and for how beautifully the duo integrated them into a sound unique to them and them alone. After this stunning album, Daft Punk would return to their more electronic beats with their third release: "Human After All". HAA is very synth and rock inspired, with several hits such as "Technologic" and "Robot Rock". I remember watching the Robot Rock music video and thinking, "God, I wish I was as cool as them." So, that about sums up the feel of the album. Features lyrics that emphasize the changing technological times and voices concern for the state of human feelings in the midst of this change. Crazy to think, even then, we were worried about our dependency on tech.

Daft Punk would then go on to release "Alive 2007", a live album that was taken from their performance at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy arena in Paris on the 14th of June, 2007, during the titular Alive 2007 tour. It is, to this day, one of my favorite performances, along with their Coachella set. They mixed and mashed songs together like they were making them up on the spot and finding gold. Every DP fan knows the goosebumps that come with listening to a song from Discovery perfectly melt into a HAA song. Up next, the duo would turn to making original scores. They scored Disney's "TRON:Legacy" movie and made a cameo for the movie. The movie itself is a great commentary on perfection and how it is utterly unattainable and the self-destruction that comes with trying to achieve the impossible, while the score elevates and electrifies the movie.

Their next and final album, Random Access Memories or RAM for short, would solidify the duo's standing in the music industry as it went on to win multiple Grammys for its stunning production and back to back hits, the most notable of them being 'Get Lucky', the sound of the Summer. With this final abum, Daft Punk brought in their own voice and made an album intended to act as their love letter to the music they grew up with, much like Discovery. However, instead of taking samples from said music, DP reinvented. They brought in numerous artists and made an album that is timeless and beautiful and truly reminds the world of what it feels like to be in love with music.
