Films for the Season

The first poster for the movie, 'The Lighthouse'. It depicts a lighthouse in black and white, with waves crashing against a cliff.

The Lighthouse is a 2019 film directed by Robert Eggers, a notable horror movie director. The movie features two incredible actors, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, and details a story of two lighthouse keepers who are slowly losing sanity as they deal with isolation and the terrors of the Lighthouse.

A poster for the movie 'Hereditary'. It depicts the four main characters, the family, standing and looking at something in the distance, they are positioned to be at 3/4ths view.

Hereditary is a movie dealing with trauma, grief, and family. It was released in 2018 by horror movie director Ari Aster, of Midsommar fame, and details the family's devolution as they deal with the loss of their youngest member, Charlie. Ari Aster's works are always a Treat, so I highly recommend this and his aforementioned film, Midsommar.

Movie poster for the Jordan Peele film 'Nope'. It features a blue dark background and a cloud in the middle with streamers on it. There is a plot of land directly beneath it with lights on.

Jordan Peele's 2022 film "Nope" is a commentary on Spectacle and society's obsession with it. It features a phenomenal cast including Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun. The movie itself depicts aliens, tragic incidents on set, western themes, and a killer soundtrack.

The original poster for Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining' which depicts the infamous 'Here's Johnny!' scene, faded against a black background.

The Shining is an infamous horror movie for very good reason. Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the Stephen King novel is completely unique from its source material and is so downright disturbing that it gives me actual chills everytime I watch it. Stellar performances all around, but especially from the young actor, Danny Lloyd. I'd highly recommend this movie if you're looking for a movie that will Haunt you for the rest of your Life.

Movie poster for the movie 'Annihilation', which depicts the characters with Natalie Portman's character in the front and center. Behind them is 'The Shimmer', the alien entity from the movie.

For a more philosophical and psychological horror theme, watch Annihilation. Directed by Alex Garland and released in 2018, Annihilation deals with the concept of self-destruction and how we often destroy ourselves because we hate the things we've done, are disgusted by our selves, or because it's the only way we know how to cope with trauma of any kind. The characters in this film all portray a different kind of trauma, but they're all on the same path of self-annihilation. Sci-fi meets psych horror meets body horror. Plus, Natalie Portman!
