My family and I first met Lola in March of 2020. At the time, she had her sister, Luna, with her. Both would dig under the fence that connected our neighbors' house and ours and crawl their way into our backyard. They did this often. My family and I believe it was due to malnutrition. We would feed them what we could afford to give away: Tortillas, apples, spare leftovers. At the time, we didn't have much of an attachment to Lola or her sister. Over a few months, we grew to love them. Luna was eventually adopted out, because she was more prone to destoying things, like the fence and things in the original owner's home. Lola was depressed for days after this.
Eventually, our landlady decided that enough was enough. She threatened to charge us for property damage. She didn't like that we fed the same dog that was digging holes in the dirt underneath her fence.
My mom decided to ask Lola's original owner for permission to take her with us when we left. Surprisingly, she said yes, and we were able to take Lola to our new townhome. Now, Lola is three years old, eating well, going on daily walks, and has plenty of toys. A big change from the life she led as a puppy. I'm extremely overwhelmed with love whenever I see her. I never thought I would have a dog, or really any pet after my first cats. It's cool to have a little animal to take care of and hug and love unconditionally.
